When the camera is in your face and the lights are in your eyes, it's so easy to have all your intelligent thoughts disappear from your head!

Here are our top 6 tips for video interviews:

#1 PREPARE

Unless you’re a professional actor, don’t read from a script verbatim.  You may think it’s “safer” but it always looks wooden and sterile. Prepare yourself with some dot points or questions to answer.

#2 LISTEN

When you have someone interviewing you, it’s really important to listen to them and what they are asking.  If you can narrow your focus to that person and that conversation, and put your energy into listening to them, you will likely forget the camera is there.

#3 IT'S NOT YOUR JOB TO "GET IT RIGHT"

People often feel like they have to speak perfectly, but the moment they start thinking about this, they loose it. It’s the director’s and editor’s job to make you sound perfect, it’s your job just to have a chat to the person interviewing you.

#4 DON'T START WITH "SO"

Even those that are practiced at interviews on camera often begin their sentences with “so”. Example: ‘So I started here in 2001…’ ‘So my name is James…’ ‘So we look after the animals..’

Take a breath and begin your sentence clearly.

#5 PUT YOUR ANSWERS IN CONTEXT

When someone asks you a question, it usually goes like this:

Q: Why is the work you do here important?

A: Because it helps people to engage with society.

However, on video, we won’t hear the question being asked, so we need you to put it in context:

Q: Why is the work you do here important?

A: The work we do is vital. It helps people to engage with society.

#6 MORE ENERGY AND SMILES

When you’re on camera you need to have twice the amount of energy you think you need because people always come across flat unless they are naturally vivacious. Smiling throughout your sentences is a great way to keep your viewers engaged. More smiles please!
